...A Watershed Experience

As you can imagine, your eating habits are going to be very different than what you are used to normally. This is not a bad thing though! I've had some extremely tasty backcountry meals before. As long as you keep your mind open, are willing to try new things, and.......like bagels you'll be just fine.

  • A typical menu for any given day in the backcountry would be something like this:

Breakfast:

  • Instant Oatmeal
  • Pancakes
  • Bagel and cream cheese
  • Dried fruit
  • Hot chocolate/Tang/Tea/Coffee
  • Breakfast bars

Lunches: We eat lunches away from camp at the work site, and therefore have no stove.

  • Bagels w/ PB & J, lunch meats and cheese, cream cheese
  • Granola bars
  • GORP (Good Ol' Raisins and Peanuts) aka: Trail Mix
  • Fruit roll-ups
  • Apple or Orange
  • Beef Jerky
  • String Cheese

Dinners: We eat dinners at camp, and it is usually a communal meal. (A big pot of something that everyone eats.)

  • Macaroni and cheese
  • Spaghetti
  • Casedias
  • Soup (potato, chicken noodle, etc.)
  • A vegetable of some sort
  • Bagels!

Chores:

Everyone will be assigned a set of chores each day during the trip and will be responsible for getting them done. Chores will be interchanged between everyone from day to day, that way you won't always be stuck with "dish duty."

Camp chores include:

  • Water duty (gathering, purifying, and boiling water)
  • Dish duty (doing dishes and cleaning up the kitchen area after meals)
  • Fire duty (making and maintaining the campfire)
  • Cook duty (helping prepare and serve meals)

Note:

Even though we have mules to help us pack in our gear, it is very important that we take only the food that we need, and nothing more. We pack out everything that we pack in, and carrying food both ways that went untouched is ridiculous. Before we hit the trail the group will sit down and each person will plan what he or she expects to eat at each meal. This will greatly reduce the amount of food that we haul out.

Another important factor is personal eating habits. (vegetarian etc.) You will be asked to fill out a "grocery list" prior to the trek, and that will be the place to request special accommodations that you may need. The group leaders go to great lengths to make sure everyone's needs are met.
