What do I need
to bring with me to Idaho? You'll need to pack your gear into three different
loads. They are as follows:
"Road Trip" - Travel Gear
These items need to be in a small
pack or duffel you can "carry-on" the van or stow in the trailer.
- Travel Clothes for the trip to the Selway-Bitterroot
(2 days worth)
- CLEAN travel clothes
for the return trip (2 days worth)
- Swimsuit, KOA
Campground has a pool
- Personal Hygiene Kit
- Wilderness Primer and Leave No Trace
booklets, reading material for the road (Chris will provide these for
trekkers.)
- Personal Journal
- Good books, Mags, favorite music to share with
fellow trekkers
- $$$ Money to buy meals on our road days (4 total
days). Budget for a large breakfast and supper, with light lunch each
travel day.
- Travel Personality! The road to the Selway-Bitterroot
is long. Prepare to have fun with great people.
"On Your Back" - Wilderness
Gear
These are the items you will be carrying
in your pack on the trail.
- Backpack, you should plan on carrying 30 - 40
lbs.
- Raingear
- Hat, for shade / sunglasses

- Water bottles, two 1 quart Nalgene© - or
their equivalent.
- Personal First-Aid Kit
- Compass and Water-proof matches. A compass can
be provided if you need to borrow one.
- Hiking Boots - WELL BROKEN IN! (It is impossible
to overstress the importance of having your boots broken in. Wear them
around everywhere for about two months leading up to
the trip date. You'll thank me for this comment after you arrive at
basecamp on the first hiking day.)
- Teva© style sandals for creek crossings
and camp wear
- One change of clothing - outerwear, for sudden
weather change
- Sleeping bag and pad - Put your sleeping bag
and pad inside a plastic bag in your pack. Most packs are not water-proof.

Note:
Almost all previous trekkers say (in hindsight)
that they overpacked. You will be living a very different lifestyle as
opposed to your normal routine, and therefore you should pack differently.
Example: having a clean shirt or pants every day is usually not necessary.
Less is more on this trek.
Also, if you have any questions about the gear
or problems obtaining any of these items, contact Chris
or post a message in the forums.
